In response to economic hardships, environmental degradation, and climate change, Maasai Doughnut Village was founded to provide innovative, community-driven solutions. By focusing on economic empowerment, sustainable agriculture, education, and climate action, we strive to restore ecosystems, strengthen livelihoods, and preserve cultural heritage. Project Focus

Maasai Doughnut Village is an initiative dedicated to economic empowerment, sustainable agriculture, education, and climate action, inspired by the Doughnut Economy framework. The project integrates traditional Maasai wisdom with regenerative practices to build a thriving, self-sustaining community while restoring ecological balance.

Project Objectives:

  • Economic Empowerment: Develop community-led enterprises that provide dignified livelihoods while preserving Maasai culture and ecological integrity.
  • Sustainable Agriculture & Regenerative Land Use: Promote regenerative agriculture, holistic grazing, and reforestation to restore degraded landscapes and enhance food security.
  • Education & Knowledge Sharing: Provide climate education, entrepreneurship training, and intergenerational knowledge exchange to empower the next generation.
  • Climate Action & Resilience: Implement climate adaptation strategies, rewilding efforts, and community-led conservation initiatives.

Project Components:

  • Regenerative Agriculture & Land Restoration: Training communities in permaculture, agroforestry, and holistic land management. Establishing demonstration farms and food forests. Rewilding degraded land with native trees and grasslands.
  • Community-Led Enterprises & Livelihoods: Developing sustainable income sources such as eco-tourism, regenerative livestock practices, and value-added products. Supporting women and youth entrepreneurs through skill development and market access.
  • Climate Education & Cultural Revitalization: Educating communities on climate resilience, sustainable practices, and the Doughnut Economy model. Strengthening cultural identity through storytelling, traditional knowledge documentation, and mentorship programs.
  • Circular Economy & Zero Waste Initiatives: Promoting waste-to-resource innovations, including composting, biogas, and eco-friendly crafts. Encouraging local production and consumption to reduce environmental impact.

Project Governance & Community Engagement:

The Maasai Doughnut Village operates under a participatory governance structure, guided by Ilpayiani Ontomonok (Council of Elders) alongside youth leaders, women’s groups, and technical advisors. The project follows a decentralized decision-making approach, ensuring that Maasai voices shape its direction.
